Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition plays a significant role in English learning. For the sake of improving the efficiency of vocabulary learning, a better method of vocabulary learning should be explored. Present research derives methods that can facilitate vocabulary learning through exploring the interaction between semantic field theory and sense relations. First, this paper introduces sense relations between word, including synonymy, hyponymy, antonymy, etc. And then, this research depicts semantic field theory: Trier’s paradigmatic semantic field theory and Pozig’s syntagmatic semantic field theory, trying to construct different semantic relations. Finally, this thesis explores the application of semantic field in vocabulary learning, which helps develop learners’ awareness of English thinking and systematic thinking skills. By associating and expanding new and old words with a core meaning in the field, it is helpful to expand the breadth and depth of students’ vocabulary and improve their interest in learning vocabulary and their ability of comprehensive application.
