Abstract

As a special kind of luminescent material, rare earth complexes have attracted great interest throughout the world owing to their peculiarities of their luminescent properties and potential application in full-color flat panel displays. In this article, we clarified the design and synthesis of novel rare earth europium and terbium complexes in recent years, and the optimization of electroluminescent devices based on rare earth europium and terbium complexes. Several helpful methods in enhancing electroluminescence properties of rare earth complexes were summarized. The new applications of europium, terbium and gadolinium complexes as sensitizer in organic electroluminescent devices were also emphatically introduced. The results showed that the application of rare earth complexes as sensitizer can realize the complementary advantages of rare earth complexes and transition metal complexes, thus improving the performances of organic electroluminescent devices. These provide a new way for design and optimization of new high-performance organic electroluminescent devices.
