Abstract
Pyrolysis—mass spectrometry (Py-MS) was used to form a temporary classification for a large number of bacterial estuarine isolates, which were difficult to identify by conventional approaches. The isolates were found to fall into six main cluster groups. The majority of isolates clustered most closely with three reference strains of Pseudomonas sp. Py-MS is a very rapid method for the production of temporary taxonomic structures and has considerable potential for use where large numbers of isolates of unknown identity must be characterised prior to other studies.
