Abstract

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has published a set of standards covering the effects, environments, tests and protection methods for dealing with the threat of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). These publications have been developed by IEC Subcommittee 77C and are horizontal in nature. They are not applied to specific products or for particular applications. In this paper it will be shown how to apply IEC 61000-2-10 to develop the specifications for the protection to be applied to long external conductors such as power and telecommunications lines entering a building.
