Abstract

Despite ongoing innovations in the design of 3D seismic surveys, the design of 2D seismic surveys has changed relatively little since their introduction. Two-dimensional and 3D surveys face similar challenges. One challenge is how to plan survey lines to minimize health, safety, and environmental (HSE) exposure and cost. In this paper, I show how graph theory can be used to automatically design optimized 2D survey lines. The paper includes examples that address minimizing the impact of new line clearing, maximizing the use of existing clearing, and reducing HSE risk.
