Abstract

The depth of anesthesia is always an important thing that anesthesiologist concerns. General anesthesia is a special and very complicated state including hypnosis, loss of memory , inhibiting the response of pain and muscles relaxing. The concept of entropy, originally derived from thermodynamics, has been successfully applied in EEG analysis. By collecting the data of EEG and Frontal electromyogram (FEMG) , entropy can reflect the complexity of activity of EEG in values by a special algorithm. In 2003, Datex-Ohmeda intreduced the Entropy Moduletrade mark for measuring depth of anesthesia. Based on the Shannon entropy of the EEG, state entropy (SE) of the EEG(0.8 Hz-32 Hz), response entropy(RE) of EEG and FEMG(0.8 Hz-47 Hz) are calculated. This text reviewed the depth of anesthesia and the clinical application of entropy. Key words: The depth of anesthesia; Entropy; State entropy; Response entropy
