Abstract

CCTV visual aids currently on the market are examined with relation to function in a working environment and criteria for physical and visual discomfort discussed.The problems of matching lower visual capacity to the very limited job opportunities are evaluated and specific examples given of the difficulties experienced in overcoming the many socio‐economic and ergonomic requirements to achieve job satisfaction for employee with low vision and adequate work output for the employer.The application of electro‐optical enhancement principles to computer video display units, other related business machine keyboard functions and miniaturization of electronic components, are considered as broadening the visual potential of the low vision patient and possibly extending employment opportunities.Illustrations are given of developments made by workers in Europe and the U.S. towards Improvement in function are also examined.The implications for the fully sighted of the increasing use of CCTV in computer video display units, surveillance and monitoring are briefly discussed.
