Abstract
A new solution formulation has been developed which permits the rapid electrodeposition of wear-resistant cobalt—molybdenum alloys by brush or selective area plating. This technique enables the electroplating of selected areas of a die which are subjected to high wear. These areas include the flash-land of a hot-forging die and the radiused edges of a press-forming tool. The brush-plating process has the additional advantage of portability, which allows large dies to be treated in-situ. Industrial trials of these coatings have been carried out in two main metal working areas — hot forging and cold pressing. The hot-forging trials have been carried out in collaboration with forging companies in the Midlands, and the cold pressing trials in collaboration with a large British car manufacturer. The results of these trials have shown that hot-forging die life may be increased by up to 100% and that “down-time” due to metal pick-up on cold pressing tools can be reduced, or even eliminated. In consequence, significant savings can be made in both direct and indirect costs.
