Abstract

This paper describes the application of active magnetic bearings to a power turbine. In particular, extensive redesign of the power turbine shaft and casing to accommodate the magnetic bearings is discussed. The combination of engineering problems unique to power turbines (large gyroscopic effects, high axial loading and elevated temperatures) are detailed. A description of some of the assembly problems and specialized tooling is included along with preliminary operating experiences.
