Abstract
Abstract Many developing countries have adopted the Open University concept, and this has occurred in Thailand at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU). Courses designed for STOU are developed in five stages looking at needs, curriculum development, production of multi‐media packages, delivery and evaluation. A pilot project is under way studying the application of a microcomputer instructional system based on the Keller Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) plan and using the Guelph Versatile Interactive Teaching and Learning (VITAL) system. The four objectives are: (a) to establish a research and development team in STOU and Guelph; (b) to develop at STOU a micro‐based courseware development capability; (c) to provide a Thai character set for the VITAL authoring system, and (d) to develop and test computer‐based materials in three key subject areas. The field trial methodology and findings are discussed.
