Abstract
A series of vinylpyrrolidone/acrylic acid copolymers in the molecular weight range, 5000–50,000, has been synthesized. Variation of the net negative charge renders these polymers good models of proteins. The polymers can be iodinated under simple chemical conditions, forming a polymeriodine bond which is stable under physiological conditions. The clearance of these polymers from the circulation of the rabbit and the permeability of the small intestine toward a neutral polymer (mol wt, 5000) has been studied. The radio-labeled polymer (mol wt, 5000) has potential in physiological and possibly clinical studies.
