Abstract

During the past year, considerable progress has been made in describing the Application and Presentation Layers of the Reference Model of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). In this paper the work of ANSI, ISO, and CCITT on the Application Layer is discussed. The author herein discusses communication of information between application processes and, building on the concepts introduced, describes the role of the Application Layer in supporting communication.
