The application for the diagnosis of the smears examination of fungal corneal ulcer

Abstract

Objective To discuss the use and importance of the diagnosis of the smears examination of fongal corneal ulcer.Methods Suspected patients of fungal corneal ulcer were examined by corneal smears examination.Alter instillation of local anesthetic drops in the affected eye of the patient, corneal scrapings were taken from the edge as well as the base of the ulcer with a blade.corneal ulcerations were placed on a glass slide and a drop of the reagent was added over the tissue specimen and a coverslip was used, taking care of trapping air bubbles.Direct preparations were examined immediately under the microscope for the presence of fungal el-ements.Final diagnosis by fungus and hypha.Result The total positive rate of corneal smears examination of 22 patients with suspected fungal corneal ulcer was 72.73%.Conclusion Direct microscopic evaluation is the most valuable and rapid diagnostic tool for the detection of fungal elements in corneal scrapings.The results of smears from fungal corneal ulcer are accurate and fast,the examination can be widely applied to clinic.
