Abstract

Ionic liquids can improve the characteristics of existing nanomaterials. They are often used to obtain greater thermal and chemical stability, increase conductivity and reactivity in a non-toxic way, thereby opening up a wider area of application. They can act as templates for synthesis of such nanoparticles. Synthesized nanoparticles by the application of ILs are used in sensors, carbon paste electrodes, carbon ionic electrodes and liquid carbon nanotubes. They are also used as catalysts in many organic synthesis processes. Tunable and functional fluid IL based nanoparticles with somewhat modifiable properties can be synthesized using ionic liquids. Thus, Ionic liquids can be further used to explore new ways to better the existing nanoparticles as well as synthesize a whole new different class of nanoparticles.
