Abstract

Research was undertaken to assess the test methods normally used to determine the major geotechnical properties of lateritic soils. For this technical note, the testing method which uses the cone penetrometer for the determination of the liquid limit was selected and the results obtained were correlated with those obtained by the traditionally used Casagrande method (Queiroz de Carvalho, 1985). In that paper, the author statistically analysed the methodology (Casagrande apparatus) used to determine the liquid limit of the same soils selected for this technical note and concluded that the Casagrande apparatus is quite suitable for the type of lateritic soils studied. The results presented here are from nine lateritic soil samples from north and northeast Brazil. (TRRL)
