Abstract

The results of investigations on the ferns Ceratopteris thalictroides and Azolla filiculoides have reconfirmed the importance of the apical cell as an initiating cell in shoots and roots, contrary to recently accepted conclusions for such plants. Determinations of the mitotic index, duration of the cell cycle and of mitosis, and DNA content of nuclei support the ‘classical’ concept of the role of the apical cell in histogenesis.
