Abstract

Uranium monophosphide crystallizes in a NaCl-type structure with a 0 = 5.590 ± 0.004 Å. It is paramagnetic at room temperature and antiferromagnetic at liquid nitrogen temperature. The chemical and magnetic unit cells are of the same size. The magnetic moment directions and the positions of the 4 uranium atoms in the magnetic cell are, +: 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 0 and −: 1/2 0 1/2; 0 1/2 1/2. They are aligned ferromagnetically in each layer but oppositely aligned in alternating layers perpendicular to (001) plane. The symmetry of the chemical cell is cubic but of the magnetic cell tetragonal. The atomic magnetic moment at liquid nitrogen temperature is 1.72 ± 0.02 Bohr magnetons. A magnetic form-factor curve for the uranium atoms is given.
