The transverse ligament of the Atlas is the most important ligament in the body; without it death will soon follow. The ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb is a most useful ligament; without it the hand and thus the whole upper limb is compromised. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) however, remains the subject of more discussion, opinion and controversy than either.
