The annual epilepsy review

Abstract

Epilepsy is a common, chronic neurological condition. New diagnoses of epilepsy and more complex cases are managed in secondary care with primary care support. However, for many with stable epilepsy, primary care is the main point of contact for care. Epilepsy management has improved, but we should remember that it is a potentially life-threatening condition and status epilepticus is a medical emergency. This article discusses the pathophysiology and types of seizures in epilepsy. The article considers diagnosis, management, pharmacological aspects and specific considerations relating to pregnancy and driving. GPs are required to establish and maintain a register of patients aged 18 years and over receiving drug treatment for epilepsy. An annual review by GPs is considered good practice, and this article outlines key areas to be covered.
