Abstract

Measurements of gross primary production were made approximately twice a month from November 1963 to October 1964 in the Saronicos Gulf (Aegean Sea). The in situ 14C method was used. Results showed that gross primary production varied from 70 to 334 mg of C m−2 day−1. The annual gross primary production was calculated to be 64 g of C m−2. A well‐defined maximum of production was found in the early spring (February– March) while on the average changes in production with depth showed a maximum at about 10 m.
