Abstract

The nature of mechanical damage caused by grinding (100), (110), and (111) faces of MgO crystals is investigated using microindentation, scratch and etching techniques. Conclusive evidence in support of a plastically deformed layer containing dislocations is presented. It is shown that microcracks and dislocations introduced by the mechanical process affect microhardness and dissolution rate.
