Abstract A schema of galaxy formation is developed in which the environmental influence of large-scale structure plays a dominant role. This schema was motivated by the observation that the fraction of E and S0 galaxies is much higher in clusters than in low-density regions and by an inference that those spirals that are found in clusters probably have fallen in relatively recently from the low-density regions. It is proposed that the tidal field of the Local Supercluster acts to determine the morphology of galaxies by controlling the total angular momentum content of the collapsing protogalaxies in the central cluster. The distinctive morphological components, disks and spheroids, are determined by the specific angular momentum of a system. Systems with high angular momentum formed disks, while systems with low angular momentum developed into spheroids.
