Abstract
The 24Mg(t, p) 26Mg and 25Mg(d, p) 26Mg reactions have been studied at incident energies of 11.0 and 10.0 MeV respectively using the Aldermaston multi-angle spectrograph. Angular distributions of 20 proton groups were measured from the former reactions and 18 from the (d, p) reaction. Plane wave stripping curves have been fitted to the angular distributions and where possible spin and parity assignments have been made. Relative reduced widths were extracted from the (d, p) measurements. The inelastic scattering of deuterons from 26Mg was also investigated at an incident energy of 12 MeV. Only the deuteron groups leading to the first and second excited states showed appreciable intensity, and angular distributions of these are presented. Previous results from the 27Al(t, α) 26Mg reaction are analysed in the light of the (2 J+1) rule and have enabled some spin ambiguities, arising from the stripping investigation, to be removed. The possible occurrence of collective effects in 26Mg are discussed.
