Abstract

The angular distribution of the recoil products from the (p, pn) and (p, p2n) reactions of 58Ni and the (p, pn) and (p, p3n) reactions on 197Au were measured at 400 MeV in order to study the mechanisms of these reactions. The 58Ni(p, pn) 57Ni reaction appears to proceed completely via a clean knock-out mechanism while the (p, pn) reaction on 197Au is only about 50 % clean knock-out. The apparent change in the (p, pn) reaction mechanism with target mass is studied and is correlated with the total (p, pn) reaction cross section. The isomeric ratio of the 196Au is constant with respect to recoil angle. The mechanisms of the more complex (p, p2n) and (p, p3n) reactions are also discussed.
