Abstract

Britain’s nuclear deterrent was to have at least one of the four Polaris submarines, Resolution, Repulse, Renown and Revenge, patrolling in the North Atlantic at all times. From there one of the nuclear avengers could reach targets in the Soviet Union.1 These submarines constituted a vital aspect of Britain’s defence. Defence was also a key part of Heath’s vision of European integration and this chapter shows how his plans for European defence cooperation affected the core of the Anglo-American special relationship — the nuclear relationship.KeywordsNuclear WeaponSpecial RelationshipBritish GovernmentNuclear InterdependenceDefence BudgetThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
