Abstract
Abstract This chapter first discusses the idea of myth and how it relates to what we know about the Ancient Olympic Games. A short history of the Ancient Games is the presented, followed by a discussion, in turn, of: (1) the events that made up the Ancient Games programme; (2) political aspects of the history of the Ancient Games; (3) the issue of amateurism and professionalism; (4) the role of women; and (5) the eventual demise of the Ancient Games.
