The ANC’s precarious majority ahead of South Africa’s national elections

Abstract

The African National Congress has entered a national-election season in a historically weak position and risks losing its majority for the first time in South Africa’s post-apartheid history. The party’s decline may open the way to political realignment and potentially a more vibrant democracy, but it is not an immediate panacea for all of the country’s ills.
