Abstract

The great-grandniece of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), Princess Marie Bonaparte (1882-1962), dedicated her career and body to the study of the female orgasm. A respected psychoanalyst and contemporary of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), Bonaparte helped develop, and then underwent, the urogynecological surgery known as the Halban-Narjani procedure. This procedure, in which the clitoris is surgically relocated more proximally to the vagina to produce orgasm by vaginal penetration, ultimately proved unsuccessful.
