Abstract

The article deals with a comprehensive analysis of the translation services domestic market in order to reveal the main changes that have occurred over the past decades as well as identify the latest trends in translators’ innovative professional activity. The author proves that an effective method of teaching translation in higher education institutions (HEI) should be based on the processes that take place on the translation market and the particular requirements for translators in terms of innovative professional activities. The study revealed that the main translation services provided by Ukrainian top translation companies include: technical and industry-specific translation (68% of the total volume of translations); localization (20%); interpretation (7%); audio-visual translation (5%). Leading Ukrainian companies have five main requirements for candidates for the position of a translator, namely: 1) CAT-knowledge (100% of all the companies); 2) working experience (70% of the translation companies mentioned it as a mandatory requirement; 30% – as desirable and preferred); 3) excellent command of the source and target language (100% of all the companies); 4) higher philological and / or special education (60% of the companies); 5) specialization (70% of the companies). The article also analyzes the compliance of translation students’ professional training with the defined market requirements basing on the views of leading domestic and foreign scientists. The author highlights the main reasons for the inconsistency of the syllabuses and the translators’ innovative professional activity, namely: the increase of general scientific disciplines due to the decrease of professional ones, lack of specialization, poor information technology training, absence of applied disciplines, the predominance of oral and literary translation disciplines in curricula. The author analyzes the pedagogical system of translation students’ professional training based on the requirements of the translation services market (Gabr, 2001). It is regarded as an effective basis for developing curricula and programs for professional training of competitive translation specialists
