Abstract

around the problem which Rowan labelled the riddle of migration. Both external stimulation and internal physiological conditions seem to affect the tendency of the bird to become restless and migrate. The final paper by Calhoun is a behavioral analysis of the phenomenon of home range in rodents. Where mice react to a particular goal such as shelter or food they are likely to travel only as far as the nearest available source of satisfaction. However, in their exploratory behavior they are likely to travel considerably farther until some limit is reached. It may be inferred that the results of trapping data based on food or shelter boxes might tend to give a somewhat limited picture of the true home range. It seems particularly appropriate that this group of papers, and the number of ECOLOGY whose animal half it comprises, should be dedicated to the memory of Warder Clyde Allee, pioneer student and tireless investigator of animal behavior.
