Abstract

AbstractIn the present chapter, we outline the Discourse Flow Analysis, an automated procedure designed to analyze discourse in communicative contexts. The DFA is an automated low-inferential procedure of bottom-up content analysis conceiving discourse as a dynamic network of meanings. It aims at depicting the processes through which meaning is generated and unfolds within and because of the discursive dynamics itself. The first applications of the DFA have been made in the context of psychotherapy research to analyze the discursive (dialogical) exchange between client and therapist in therapy sessions verbatim transcripts; however, the DFA can be applied to the analysis of any communicative process instantiating a given social practice. Our aim in this chapter is to provide a short review of this approach. We first summarize its theoretical background; second, we describe its procedure of analysis; third, we review the empirical studies conducted so far; finally, we discuss future developments and applications.
