Abstract

ABSTRACT Analyses of seismic amplitude vs offset (source to receiver distance), AVO, can yield information regarding the physical properties of the reflecting horizons. Specifically, changes in formation fluid content are theoretically discernible in the behavioral changes in AVO, due principally to changes in the Poisson's ratio of the rock units. An AVO analysis of five seismic lines across an oil field in Saudi Arabia was conducted in an attempt to detect the spatial position of the oil/water contacts. The results indicate that the AVO patterns are directly correlative with the known fluid contacts in the area.
