Abstract

The amorphous to icosahedral phase transformation in mechanically alloyed Al 75Cu 15V 10 amorphous powder was investigated after 20 h milling by X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. The differential scanning calorimeter thermogram exhibits two exothermic reactions with peak temperatures and heat contents of 727 K and 1.43 kJ mol −1 and 794 K and 0.17 kJ mol −1, and an endothermic reaction with an onset temperature of 829 K. The first exothermic reaction corresponds to the transformation from the amorphous to the icosahedral phase. The quasilattice constant of the icosahedral phase obtained is 0.4658 nm. The second exothermic reaction corresponds to the transformation from the icosahedral phase to Al 3V and Al 2Cu intermetallic compounds. The endothermic reaction is due to fusion of the powder.
