Abstract

The Americas Revealed: Collecting colonial and modern Latin American art in the United States is the fourth volume in the series Frick Collection Studies in the History of Art Collecting in America, and the first in the series to reach beyond the categories of European and American art associated with the Frick Collection. Emerging from a symposium of the same name in 2014, the volume gathers together a highly stimulating group of essays by eleven specialists exploring the formation in the United States of public and private collections of art from the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Americas. The volume opens with a sweeping introduction by its editor, Edward J. Sullivan. Starting at the very beginning, Sullivan seeks out the initial points of contact between Europeans and indigenous peoples, identifying the artists and collectors who first developed a curiosity about art created in Latin America.
