Abstract

'Some of the hypocritical sort taunt us with undervaluing archaeological science by this cheerful conviviality they think forsooth that we ought to be constantly plying the spade and pickaxe ... But while the pickaxe and the spade are at all due places and times in requisition by those who can wield them ... why should we obstinately repudiate picturesque scenes, the joyous expression of kindly feeling, the wine and the venison?'
