Abstract

This second edition of The Almanac of State Legislatures covers all 6,743 state senate and house districts to bring researchers the most current, accurate and detailed state-level information available on the economic and political landscape of the United States.Data from the first edition, which was based on the 1990 census, has been updated to reflect late-decade census estimates. Included are many other sources of data so readers can easily spot the changes in the state legislatures and identify the emerging trends of today. Percentage changes from the 1990 census data, including population, average household income, district type, unemployment rate, college education, and ethnicity are also revealed.Statistical profiles give a detailed snapshot of the current geographic, economic, political, and sociological composition of each district. District-by-district data profiles describe residents, including their age, ethnicity, income, education, and occupation. For the first time, one book provides comparison between the socio-economic makeup of each individual legislative district. In addition, nearly 300 full-color computer-generated maps plot the precise geographic boundaries of each state legislative district, including 186 maps for dense urban areas, all based on district political boundaries drawn for the 1990s.
