Abstract

AbstractIn railway systems the alignment refers to the centre line of the railway track. The alignment of ordinary and high-speed railways is composed of vertical and horizontal elements. The vertical alignment consists of straight (tangent) railway grades and the circular or parabolic curves that connect these grades. The horizontal alignment includes the straight (tangent) sections of the railway, the circular curves and the transition curves. The various aspects influencing alignment are discussed in this chapter.
