Abstract

Little was known about algae of Oklahoma until 1929 as no systematic work had been done and no records had been published. In that year Taft started an investigation on the extent of the algal flora of the state. His first published reports were on the Desmidiaceae (1931, 1934, 1937) the Oedogoniaceae (1935), and the Vaucheriaceae (1937). A paper on the Zygnemataceae by Transeau, Tiffany, Taft, and Li (1934) was a report of new species only. Leake (1939) reported motile cells of Basicladia crassa Hoffman and Tilden. Additional species were listed by Taft (1940). The total number of recorded algae of Oklahoma preceding the present investigation was 458 species, varieties, and forms.
