Abstract
To the Editor.— Congratulations to Rose et al 1 for their article entitled Age Threshold for Isoniazid Chemoprophylaxis. This sorely needed analysis points out that, for all age groups, the benefits of isoniazid in the prevention of tuberculosis outweigh the risks. Publication of this article inThe Journalwill, I hope, counter some of the destructive effects on tuberculosis control in the United States caused by the 1981 publication of the article by Taylor et al 2 entitled: Should Young Adults With a Positive Tuberculin Test Take Isoniazid? Even though an accompanying editorial by Comstock 3 pointed out that the assumptions of Taylor et al were severely limited and therefore misleading, that article's effect on tuberculosis control in the United States was dramatic. The Centers for Disease Control continually report that preventive isoniazid therapy is completed by only 75% of high-risk patients for whom it is prescribed. 4 However,
