Abstract

In the Netherlands, as in many other western countries, the growth of the welfare state has led to a considerable expansion of the public sector. The present economic crisis, however, puts public sector organizations in a problematic situation. The crisis, though, is not only a financial one. Public sector organizations also constantly demonstrate signs of uncontrollability. The public sector seems not only growth-oriented but growth-addicted. The article tries to shed some light on dilemmas encountered in the process of cuts in public sector expenditure in the Netherlands and some suggestions regarding conditions to be considered in this process are being put forward.
