Abstract

Ramona and George Houston Bass are partners in their professional and personal lives. Parents of two sons, they are creating theatre for the generations of a new world. Ramona Bass reshapes the wisdom of folk tales from the cultures of the world for the delight and enlightenment of children. George Bass uses performance modes as a link between the university and the larger community, the college-trained and the working class, to engage them in a mutual exchange of knowledge and ideas. Theirs is a derivative theatre, built on stories, tales, oral history, improvisation and scholarship. George Bass is Director, Ramona Bass is costume designer of Rites and Reason, Afro-American theatre program at Brown University.
