Abstract

Ancient Indian slavery existed but in a milder form compared to the slavery of 'Black Africa'. The vanquished became slaves of the victors. The Epic and Vedic period, the Muslims and Buddhists had slaves. Trading in slaves from East Africa to Egypt, Arabia and India has been going on from the beginning of the Christian era. The Arabs brought them from the African Horn or Abyssinia. Portuguese State of India consisted of three small enclosures on the Western coast of India - Goa, Daman, Nagar Aveli and Diu and slave trading was present then. The British observed that slaves formed a marketable article in the home and foreign trade. A large number of Siddis came to India from the different parts of Africa as soldiers to serve in the Muslim armies of the Nawabs and Sultanates.
