Abstract
This chapter seeks to place in dialogue contemporary discussions on affect theory, new materialism, and aesthetic thought in relation to three case studies from recent Latin American fiction, namely Valeria Luiselli's La historia de mis dientes , Mónica Ojeda's Nefando , and Samanta Schweblin's Kentukis . These three novels serve as case studies to identify a collective and widespread fetishization of objects in our contemporary world that are linked to hyperconsumerism, abject sexual desires, or voyeurism. The appearance of these fictional objects are discussed in light of concepts such as “events of the sensible” to highlight how these novels can be read as efforts to signal the triangular connections among affects, aesthetics, and objects. The abject objects in question are fictional images and a video game that produce and reproduce images of child pornography, incest, and necrophilia.
