Abstract

An investigation of the aetiology of bovine mastitis in seven herds of Zebu cattle in three provinces of the Sudan has been carried out in which 624 of the 1.168 cows in these herds were examined clinically and the milk sampled. Of these, 125 cows (10·7 per cent) had been reported by field veterinary officers as cases of clinical mastitis with definite gross pathological lesions and change in udder secretion (group A). The other 499 cows (group B) were selected at random from the seven herds and 230 (46·1 per cent) of them showed subclinical mastitis as judged by leucocyte count and confirmed by cultural tests.
