Abstract

A magnetically active core-shell-structured γ-Fe2O3-mesoporous silica sphere (F-MSS) catalyst was developed for the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols. Thus, F-MSS was prepared by transferation of Fe3O4 (chloroform dispersion) from chloroform to water with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTBA) as a phase-transfer agent, followed by formation of silica sol-gel on Fe3O4 with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TOES) and calcination at 500 ˚C. The aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols was performed with oxygen bubbling in the presence of F-MSS in PEG-200 to give the corresponding aldehydes in 60-94% conversion with 84-98% selectivity (3 examples).
