Abstract

This essay deals with an explanation of how Satyajit Ray handles the traditional folk tale narrative in his first venture into the genre of children's film. What is unique about this film is how he presents the adventure story while managing to convey most of its meanings through the skillful use of music and songs, all of his own composition. Both his narrative and musical abilities enable him to treat his material with a profound and balanced sense of seriousness and fun. The essay also focuses on the patriarchal nature of the narrative and provides some useful background information about Ray's musical achievements in the hope that this will be one area in the Ray canon that will be critically examined more fully in the future.
