Abstract

The adsorption of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) on a dropping mercury electrode has been studied in Na 2SO 4 and phosphate buffer solutions by drop time measurements. β-CD is a strong adsorbant, half coverage, θ 2 , being reached in the solution containing 5 × 10 −5 M. The adsorption behaviour is similar to that for other non-polar, organic compounds such as simple sugars. The adsorption follows a Langmuir isotherm with ΔḠ max 0 = −34.7 kJ mol −1. The adsorption isotherm can be used for the estimation of β-CD in the solution.
