Abstract

The role of the adrenal cortex in spontaneous running wheel activity was examined. Adrenalectomy reduced activity levels and replacement therapy with corticosterone returned running levels to those of intact animals. Of the physiological measures related to intermediary metabolism which were taken, only the correlation of activity level and per cent fat in the carcass was significant. It was hypothesized that: (1) activity be included in that class of behaviors termed regulatory behaviors; (2) that running serves the organism in the regulation of body fat levels; and (3) that this regulation is, at least in part, accomplished by concomitant variations in the levels of adrenocortical functioning.
