Abstract

Traditionally, there has not been an oncology service dedicated specifically to the management of adolescents and young adults; rather, these patients are arbitrarily assigned to either an adult or pediatric oncology service. Thus, patients 13 to 21 years of age are usually treated by physicians who are inexperienced and perhaps uncomfortable with caring for individuals in this age range. In 1999, the Adolescent and Young Adult Program was established in the Division of Pediatrics at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. This program has created a platform for the exchange of expertise between the pediatric and adult oncology services with the goal of providing the best medical care and psychosocial support for adolescent and young adult cancer patients. M. D. Anderson is one of only a few centers worldwide to offer this unique dimension of care. This chapter describes the Adolescent and Young Adult Program and how it is being used to improve cancer-related outcomes and quality of life for this patient group.
