Abstract

This article reports on the development, testing and application of the Adolescent Adjustment Scale. The scale was examined with case record material from a sample of 78 adolescent girls placed in one group home over a fourteen year period. Using the scale, overall adjustment was predicted by a low number of school attendance problems. Potential uses of the 10-item Likerttype rating scale include establishing placement criteria for adolescents needing a variety of out-of-home placements, targeting goals for treatment planning and providing on-going assessment of the adolescent's adjustment in group home settings. Recommendations for further analysis of the scale include validity testing, testing with prospective data collection and use of the scale with adolescents in a variety of out-of-home placements.
